FAQ
Questions about safeat
In shortsafeat is a free map that only shows restaurants where our review of the last 12 months of public reviews and visitor reports found no serious food-safety concern. It is not an inspection or a guarantee.
What is safeat?
safeat is a free map of restaurants where our review found no serious food-safety concern. It only shows places where recent reviews and visitor reports describe no serious food-safety problem: food poisoning, unsafe food, an allergen issue or a hygiene problem. It is an app for iPhone and Android.
Is safeat free? Do I need an account?
Yes, safeat is free. The map and every place page work without an account. A free account is only needed to save places, send a report or scan a menu.
How does safeat decide which restaurants to show?
We read the negative public reviews (1 to 3 stars) of each restaurant from the last 12 months, and reports from visitors, looking for food poisoning, unsafe food, allergen issues and hygiene problems. A restaurant appears on the map only when we found no serious problem of this kind.
What does “Low concern” mean?
It means we checked the place and found no serious food-safety problem in its recent public reviews and visitor reports. The page of each place shows the month of that check. It is not an inspection or a guarantee.
If a restaurant is not on the map, does it mean you found a problem?
No. safeat does not show every restaurant. A place can be missing because we have not checked it yet, or for other reasons. If a restaurant is not on the map, it does not mean we found a problem.
What do the orange and red areas on the map mean?
Orange areas are neighborhoods where we found food-safety concerns at more than a third of the restaurants we checked; red areas, at half or more. Restaurants where we found food-safety concerns are not on the map. An area describes a neighborhood, not any single restaurant in it.
Can safeat guarantee that I will not get food poisoning?
No. We may have missed a review or a problem: we only read reviews from the last 12 months, and many problems are never posted online. safeat helps you choose; it cannot guarantee the hygiene, food safety or allergen safety of any restaurant.
I have a food allergy. Can I rely on safeat?
Use safeat as a first filter only. Always tell the staff about your allergy and check with the restaurant before you eat, every time.
Which cities does safeat cover?
Today safeat covers Ko Pha-ngan, Patong, Ban Ao Nang, Ko Tao (Thailand). We add new cities regularly.
Does safeat work on my phone?
Yes. safeat is an app for iPhone and Android.
How does the menu scan work?
In the safeat app, open the Scan tab and take a photo of a restaurant menu, or choose one you already took. Each dish on the photo gets a green, orange or red dot for how risky it usually is for a traveler’s stomach: raw meat, fish and seafood are red, for example. Tap a dish to read what it is and what makes it riskier, in your language. The menu scan needs a free account and allows 20 menus a month. It is written by AI from your photo, so it can be wrong: it is about the dish in general, not the restaurant, and it is not medical or allergy advice.
What happens to my menu photos?
Before sending a photo, the app makes it smaller and removes its metadata, such as where it was taken. Google Cloud Vision reads its text and Claude, Anthropic’s AI model, describes the dishes; neither uses it to train its models. safeat does not keep the photo or the result. Only photograph menus, not people.
